LA Kings (L) 2 vs Phoenix Coyotes (W) 4
The Kings have lost two games this season and both of them a result of a bad short handed goal. As if giving up short handed goals wasn't bad enough having the goalies not give their all to make the saves make it that much worse.
Jonathan Quick
Goals (3) Shots (26) Saves (23) Save % (.885)
Quick overall played a fairly decent game with one glaring error, and unfortunately for the Kings it was the goal that cost them the game. Before we get to that lets look at the first two goals against the Kings.
The first goal by Lee Stempniak was a result of hard work, a screen, and a deflection. Quick can't be blamed for this goal, though something about it made me uncomfortable I still can't put my finger on it.
The second goal by Stempniak also gave me an uneasy feeling with Quick's game, he made the first save and his defense let him down but something just didn't feel right. He left the rebound right in front and its what scares me about Quick. As long as the defense is picking up the rebounds he is fine but when they can't get to them he doesn't have a great track record for making secondary saves.
Even though the first two goals scored by the Coyotes gave me and uneasy feeling about Quick I am not prepared to call them his fault. The third goal however was in fact his fault. Never mind the fact that the goal was short handed and he should never have been put into position to make a save. The defense played the pass perfectly so Quick should have been focused on the puck, he was not. He was watching Ebbett's head and not the puck. A head fake should not beat a goalie, a goalie's concern is the puck not where the forward is looking. Quick was anticipating pass and watching the forwards head so he was not ready for the shot when it came. The result a three goal deficit and the eventual game winner.
Ilya Bryzgalov
Goals (2) Shots (30) Saves (28) Save % (.933)
Bryzgalov had the kind of game that NHL goalies should have. He let in two goals but they were goals that should beat goaltenders.
The first was a breakaway by Wayne Simmonds who made a great move and beat Bryzgalov cleaning on the back hand.
The second goal was a shot that was saved but the rebound directly hit Simmonds in the foot and rolled in off of the far post.
Both goals and Bryzgalov did what he was suppose to do and still got beat, this just illustrates how difficult it is be a goalie in the NHL.
